BEST OF DIA FOUNDATION (NY): 1/4 SOL LEWITT.

SO JUST OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK, IN BEACON, THERE IS THE MOST AMAZING GALLERY SPACE CALLED THE DIA FOUNDATION. I THOUGHT I'D WRITE ABOUT THIS GALLERY RATHER THAN SOME OF THE MORE OBVIOUS ONES IN NY LIKE THE GUGGENHEIM (EVEN THOUGH IT'S AMAZING) BECAUSE IT'S PROBABLY MORE INTERESTING. HERE WERE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT BLEW MY MIND, SO I'M GOING TO DO A BEST OF... AND SPREAD THEM OUT A BIT.

SO HERE GOES, NUMBER 1...

SOL LEWITT, DRAWING SERIES....

THIS CONSISTS OF A HUGE BODY OF WALL WORK GENERATED OVER THE LAST 35 YEARS.
FROM FAR AWAY, IT JUST LOOKS LIKE A HELL OF A LOT OF CROSS HATCHING, BUT THEN YOU REALISE THAT THERE'S A SYSTEM TO IT, AND THEN YOURE LIKE WOAHHH.

SO THERE ARE LINES IN ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS (VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL, LEFT AND RIGHT DIAGONAL), STRAIGHT AND NOT STRAIGHT, TOUCHING AND NOT TOUCHING, SOLID AND BROKEN, GRIDDED AND ARCED,  AS WELL AS THOSE MOST BASIC OF GEOMETRIC FIGURES, THE CIRCLE, SQUARE, AND TRIANGLE.

YOU DON'T FEEL AS THOUGH LEWITT IS A NAUSEATING GEEK THOUGH, THERE'S SORT OF A SENSE OF HUMOUR IN IT, AND I WAS SOLD WHEN I READ HIS WORDS:

"ONE SHOULD BE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO KNOW WHEN NOT TO BE TOO INTELLECTUAL".
